================================================ Genode Labs Newsletter - October / November 2025 ================================================ Content 1. Genode at FOSDEM 2026 2. Sculpt OS 25.10 3. Genode OS Framework release 25.11 1. Genode at FOSDEM 2026 ------------------------ At previous FOSDEM, back in February, we had a splendid time at our joined stand together with QubesOS. Both of our projects longed for repeating this experience. All the more happy we are that our joint application for a stand at FOSDEM 2026 was granted again! This gives users of QubesOS and Genode the perfect opportunity to get in touch with us developers and further fosters friendships among our teams. We are looking forward to meet you in person at FOSDEM 2026: FOSDEM 2026 in Brussels 31 January and 1 February 2026 https://fosdem.org/2026/ In addition to our stand, we are organizing FOSDEM's microkernel developer room this year, which is the go-to place for the open source community behind microkernel and component-based operating systems. The call for participation is open for submissions until December 1. Participate in the microkernel developer room 2026: https://lists.fosdem.org/pipermail/fosdem/2025q4/003644.html Both opportunities of meeting us notwithstanding, FOSDEM is worth a visit for everyone interested in free and open-source software and hardware! 2. Sculpt OS 25.10 ------------------ In October, we released version 25.10 of our Genode-based general- purpose OS for PCs, the PinePhone, and the MNT-Reform laptop: https://genode.org/news/sculpt-os-release-25.10 This time, the official release is accompanied by two experimental flavors. First, Alexander Boettcher published a system image that allows the user to pick one of five different microkernels at boot time, including the NOVA hypervisor, seL4, as well as our custom kernel. The system image is thereby a lively demonstration of Genode's versatility across kernel boundaries: https://genodians.org/alex-ab/2025-11-02-sculpt-multi-kernel Second, there is a ready-to-use Sculpt-OS flavor that uses our new configuration format instead of XML. It gives us a playground for interactively exploring and evaluating the new approach with a wide variety of practical use cases: https://genodians.org/nfeske/2025-10-30-sculpt-human If you want to have a glimpse at the likely future of Sculpt OS, you can now try out this experimental version at home. 3. Genode OS Framework release 25.11 ------------------------------------ With Genode 25.11, we are wrapping up our year of "rigidity, clarity, performance" with a release focused on under-the-hood optimizations and robustness-focused work: https://genode.org/news/genode-os-framework-release-25.11 The most impactful change of the new version, however, is the new designated role of our Genode-World repository and tooling around it. From now on, the Goa SDK replaces Genode's build system for the software, which lowers the barrier of entry for contributors and gives developers much more freedom and comfort. You can find this transition and all other topics of the new version covered in great detail by the release documentation: https://genode.org/documentation/release-notes/25.11 About the newsletter -------------------- If you have friends or colleagues who might be interested in our projects, we would appreciate you to forward this email.
